eBay Germany, France and Italy join the index

From 6 November the resale index reads eBay's German, French and Italian sites as well as the US and UK ones. What that changed in the day's figures, and what it did not.

Until this week the index read two eBay sites, the American and the British one. From today it reads five: Germany, France and Italy as well. The first run on all five counted 104,823 listings against about 64,000 the day before, and the day’s index rests on 56,998 matched listings instead of 40,306.

Most of what the three new sites returned was not new. eBay shows a listing on every site its seller ships to, with a machine-translated title and a price converted into euros, so the Japanese, Korean and American sellers who dominate the German and Italian results were already in the index through the US site. The pipeline now records a listing once a day, under the first site that returned it, and searches the English sites first; 27,056 reads were set aside that way on the first run.

What is new is the stock of German, French and Italian sellers themselves: German sellers made up about a third of the first German results for the Bottega Veneta Cassette, Italian sellers about a twentieth of the Italian ones. Their titles are in their own languages, so the matching rules learned the German, French and Italian words for the sizes and the accessories they already exclude in English (“piccola”, “mittel”, “portefeuille”, “Gürteltasche”).

The figures on the bag pages moved accordingly: more listings behind each median, and a median that now includes euro-priced stock converted at the European Central Bank’s rate of the day. A bag’s page shows the listings behind its figure and the country each ships from.
