Condition grades across the platforms

Every platform grades a pre-owned bag in its own words. This page sets those words side by side on one scale, each in the platform’s own definition, and shows what a grade is worth in the asking prices the index reads every day.

The scale

GradeWhat it means
NewNever used, with or without its tags and box. A flaw from the factory or from storage that the platform discloses still counts as new where the platform grades it so.
Like newUsed, but with no wear a buyer would see: an open-box or barely carried bag.
ExcellentCarried, with faint signs of wear visible on close inspection and nothing the listing need not show.
Very goodLight but visible wear: slightly rubbed corners, light scratches to the hardware, creases in the leather.
GoodNoticeable wear from regular use: marks, scuffed corners, darkened handles, scratched hardware. Intact and usable.
FairSignificant or several flaws: well-scuffed edges, stains, repairs or damaged parts, reflected in the price.

A listing whose wording states no grade (“pre-owned” alone) counts as not stated and stays out of the figures by grade.

What a grade is worth

For each bag with at least 30 live listings graded “good” and at least 30 in another grade on November 7, 2026, the median asking price of that grade against the median of “good”; the table shows the middle value across the 67 bags that qualify. Asking prices, not sales.

The help page defines the grades for clothing, shoes and accessories and does not name handbags; eBay’s page “List with pre-owned conditions” (in the sources below) states that the three pre-owned grades apply to women’s bags and handbags, with shorter wording: Excellent “like-new items that have been previously worn, but with little-to-no signs of wear”, Good “gently-used fashion items with light signs of wear, with or without visible flaws”, Fair “significantly visible flaws, heavy signs of wear, and/or missing or damaged components”. The other-language forms are eBay’s own labels of the same grades on its German, French, Italian and Spanish sites, as its data interface returns them for the index’s listings; eBay carries a “New with imperfections” bag below “Excellent” on this scale because it is new but flawed.

Vestiaire Collective publishes its grades as two tables of defects accepted or refused at each grade, with size limits, not as sentences. The definitions here condense those tables and are Veliri’s wording, not the platform’s; the tables themselves are on the page linked below. Hygiene defects cancel a sale at every grade.

Unless otherwise stated, they may not be in flawless condition. We inspect each item and list any notable flaws under the Condition Rating.” Its Academy article (in the sources below) lists the same seven in the same words.

What Goes Around Comes Around

The platform’s gradeIn the platform’s wordsOn this scale
PristineThe item is in like-new condition, with absolutely no signs of wear, and is in unused condition.Like new
ExcellentThe most common level: because of age and minor use over the years, items may obtain faint or minor wear, such as even patina to Louis Vuitton’s Vachetta leather or barely noticeable faint scratches to hardware.Excellent
Very GoodAs many of the items are vintage, from the 80s, 90s and 00s, they may obtain more minor and moderate wear from use throughout the years; minor pilling to canvas or scuffing to leather is a common occurrence with vintage bags.Very good
GoodOn rare occasions, bags that show significant wear: deep patina and moderate discoloration to leather is common with this grade, as well as interior discoloration and marks.Good

The grades come from a guide on the retailer’s own site, dated 27 August 2025, not from a help-centre rubric; each definition is trimmed from a longer paragraph. The retailer says every listing carries condition call-outs beyond the grade.

UnwornPreviously owned but never been used and in original condition. This item comes without its original tags.New

GoodPreviously owned and worn with some signs of use. This item may have some fading (of material or plating), patina or scratches.Good

Four grades only, with no “Very good” and no “Fair”. The wording is as Farfetch’s FAQ gave it on the day it was read; the page refuses some automated readers.

Notes

  • Rebag, The RealReal and 1stDibs are not in the table: on the day it was compiled, Rebag published no page defining its grades and its shop refused automated reading, The RealReal’s FAQ refused it, and 1stDibs publishes seller-written condition text rather than a platform-wide scale. A named person may add them from a hand read.
  • A platform’s grade describes the bag as the seller or the platform saw it under that platform’s definitions; two platforms’ “Good” are not the same promise, which is what the table is for. The mapping onto this scale is Veliri’s reading of each definition.
  • The figures by grade rest on eBay’s listings in the index, graded by eBay’s condition id and wording. Until 7 November 2026 the German, French, Italian and Spanish pre-owned wordings were read as “not stated”, so the figures by grade of 6 and 7 November rest on the English sites’ listings only.

Sources

Each platform’s grades come from its own published page, read on the day given; the scale and the mapping onto it are Veliri’s, and where a platform’s wording states no grade the table says so.

Aleksandar Petkov checked the table against the sources on November 7, 2026.

A grade is the seller’s or the platform’s own description of a bag under that platform’s definitions. Veliri does not inspect the bags, does not grade them, and does not say whether a bag is genuine.
